Specs, frequency rules by market, and the sales channel that makes this category profitable.
If you sell car accessories or run a used-car business, you have probably noticed more customers asking for "keyless entry" and "push button start" on cars that never came with them. That demand is being met by retrofit PKE keyless entry systems — and in the right markets, the margin on installation is better than on almost any other car accessory.
PKE stands for Passive Keyless Entry. The key word is passive: the driver does nothing. The system detects the smart key card in your pocket as you approach the car and unlocks the doors automatically. When you walk away — beyond roughly 2 to 3 meters — it locks the doors and can close the windows.
This is different from the older RKE (Remote Keyless Entry), where you press a button on a remote. PKE is what modern cars with smart keys do from the factory. A retrofit kit brings that same experience to older vehicles, together with a push-button start that replaces turning the key.
When comparing PKE suppliers, most of the marketing numbers are noise. Focus on these:
1. Fitment coverage. A good kit is universal for 12V vehicles but the harness and door-lock signal compatibility determine how much installation time each car actually takes. Ask the supplier for a vehicle compatibility list and wiring diagrams.
2. Immobilizer bypass. Most cars sold after 2000 have a chip in the key that talks to the immobilizer. Without a bypass module, the engine will not start from a push button. Kits that include the bypass are worth noticeably more to installers — check that yours does.
3. RF frequency for your market. 433.92MHz is the common standard across most of Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Some markets use 315MHz. Ordering the wrong frequency means customs or interference problems — a real, avoidable mistake.
4. Unlock/lock sensing range. Around 1.5–2m for unlock and 2–3m for auto-lock is the useful zone. Too wide, and the car unlocks while you are still across the parking lot; too narrow, and it feels broken.
In Indonesia, Vietnam, Nigeria, Kenya and across the Gulf, the majority of cars on the road are imported second-hand — from Japan, Korea, the US and increasingly China. Most of these cars are solid mechanically but equipped to a decade-old standard: physical keys, manual door locks, no push start.
That creates a simple upgrade math: a car worth upgrading by USD 3,000–15,000 gains a visibly "modern" feature for a modest installation cost. Used-car dealers install PKE systems before resale because it photographs well, demos well in the showroom, and raises the asking price. Retrofit workshops sell it as a service with installation labor — often doubling the hardware cost in billed price.
This is a replacement-cycle resistant category: as long as used cars keep flowing into these markets without factory smart keys, retrofit demand continues.
Order samples first. Install one kit on the most common car in your market and time the installation. That number — hours per car — determines your real installation pricing.
Ask about OEM. If you supply workshops, your logo on the smart key card and packaging builds your local brand. Low MOQs make this worth testing early.
Check the kit contents. A complete kit includes the main control unit, push start button, LF antennas (usually 3), two smart key cards, the wiring harness, the immobilizer bypass module and installation manuals. Missing pieces mean your installer improvises — avoid.
